At least 20 people found dead inside South African nightclub

South African police are investigating at least 20 deaths at a nightclub in East London’s coastal town of East London on Sunday morning.

It is not clear what caused the deaths of the young men, who were reportedly at a party to celebrate the conclusion of winter school exams.

Autopsies ordered

Local newspaper Daily Dispatch reported that bodies were found scattered across chairs and tables without any visible injuries.

“At this point, we are unable to confirm the cause of death.” said health department spokesperson Siyanda Manana.

“We are going conduct autopsies as soon to establish the probable cause for death. The remains of the deceased have been taken into state mortuaries.

The scene was expected to be visited by Bheki Cele, Police Minister.

Siyakhangela Nadevu, the owner of the club, stated to eNCA that he was called to the scene on Sunday morning.

“I am still not sure what happened. But when I called in the morning, the place was too full. Some people were trying to force their entry into the tavern.” he said.

“But, we will listen to what the police have to say about the cause of the death.”
