Canada’s Dabrowski, Mexico’s Olmos win women’s doubles title at Madrid

MADRID-
Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski won the Madrid Open on Saturday with Giuliana Olmos, her Mexican partner. This was her first doubles title.
The No. The No. 2 seeds beat third-seeded Demi Shuurs of the Netherlands (and Desiraekrawcyk of America) 7-6(1) 5-7, 10-7.
After Dabrowski reached the Madrid final in 2021 (with Schuurs), and 2019 (with YifanXu), this was Dabrowski’s first appearance in the Madrid final.
Dabrowski said, “It’s been incredible to be back and take in Madrid,” said. “I love this city very much and this is actually my 3rd final in a row there, so it seems like the charm is working. Although we had a slow start to the season, we persevered and worked together, which resulted in a great tournament.
Dabrowski & Olmos reached their final Saturday in nine tournaments together. Their previous best was 2021 in Miami when they lost in the semifinals. They had a difficult time in Madrid. They managed to overcome a one-set deficit during two of their three matches. In Saturday’s final, they reversed the trend with a spectacular first set victory in which six breaks were scored — three for each side. Dabrowski & Olmos were energized to have the lead and they won back-toback games to take control at 2-0.
Schuurs and Krawcyk made a comeback and broke Dabrowski and Olmos’ eighth game in order to tie the match at 4-4. The match was extended to 7-5 by the pair. Olmos and Dabrowski were resilient in winning their third consecutive super tiebreak. Dabrowski now holds three WTA 1000 doubles titles including Montreal in 2017 and Miami 2017.
