LONDON

Chelsea will be sold to a consortium headed by Todd Boehly of the Los Angeles Dodgers. This ends 19 years worth of ownership and extravagant investment by Roman Abramichich, until the Russian oligarch was forced to sell the Premier League club because of the conflict in Ukraine.

Abramovich, the current FIFA Club World Cup winner and 2021 European champions, has sold for 2.5 billion pounds (US$3.1billion). However, he cannot keep the proceeds. He hopes they will be donated to the foundation that helps war victims. After two months of fast negotiations to sell Chelsea’s west London club, Russia invaded Ukraine, a further 1.75 billion pounds ($2.2 million) was committed to invest in Chelsea’s stadiums and teams.

Chelsea was the winner after several other bids were rejected. saidSaturday saw the agreement of buyout terms with a consortium, which includes Boehly and Dodgers principal owners Mark Walter, Hansjorg Wiss (Swiss billionaire), and funding from Clearlake Capital.

They must be approved by the Premier League as their new owners and the government must sign off under the terms license that allows Chelsea continue to operate as a business until May 31, while remaining one of Abramovich’s frozen assets.

Abramovich has saidHe was to write off loans totalling more than 1.5 billion pounds ($1.9billion) to Chelsea, but this has been complicated by sanctions imposed by the British government

In a crackdown upon wealthy Russians with connections to President Vladimir Putin. Abramovich was positioned by his side as a possible peacemaker, but this trail has been silenced publicly in recent weeks. The billionaire has also not condemned the war.

The sanctions have hampered Chelsea’s ability to sell match tickets, and to commit to new player spending. Chelsea expects to complete the sale by May.

“Proceeds will go into a frozen UK account, with the intention of donating 100% to charity causes as confirmed Roman Abramovich,” Chelsea saidMake a statement.

Boehly, who is currently in London, was expected to attend Chelsea’s Premier League match at Stamford Bridge against Wolverhampton on Saturday. Thomas Tuchel’s Team is currently third in the standings and has four more games to go. While the title isn’t in reach, Champions League qualification seems close.

Chelsea’s stadium is among the Premier League’s oldest and most inefficient. Plans to rebuild the venue with 41,000 seats were put on hold by Abramovich, who was addressing diplomatic tensions between Britain and Russia.

Chelsea saidThe 1.75 billion pounds will be used to fund investments in Stamford Bridge and the academy.

Boehly is a part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers MLB team. He also holds minority stakes in the NBA Los Angeles Lakers and WNBA Los Angeles Sparks.

The challenge is maintaining the expectation that regular trophies will be produced under the costly transformation at Chelsea. There have been 21 in 19 years.

When Abramovich purchased Chelsea in 2003, Chelsea had only won the league title once in 1955. With the help of expensive signings, Chelsea won the Premier League title two more years later. They have added four since then, most recently in 2017.

The wealthy have increased their competition to purchase and keep players. Only in England, Manchester City has been able to benefit from Abu Dhabi investments since 2008, and Newcastle was bought by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth funds last year.

There are no details about the future leadership of Chelsea. This was the first Premier League team to be able to take advantage of a foreign mega-rich investor in 2003.

Boehly, who graduated from the London School of Economics in 2015, founded the investment company Eldridge Industries and is currently its chairman. The private holding company invests in over 70 businesses including entertainment and sports.

Boehly is also minority owner of the Los Angeles teams. He also holds stakes in Cloud9 esports organisation and DraftKings, an American fantasy sport wagering company.

He is Chairman of Security Benefit (a retirement solution provider based out of Topeka in Kansas) and MRC (an entertainment company that funds, produces, and finances film and television programming including major shows like the Golden Globes and the American Music Awards.

Penske Media is another holding of MRC, which includes Billboard, Rolling Stone and Variety.

Boehly was the president of Guggenheim Partners before co-founding Eldridge. Walter, who joined Boehly in buying Chelsea, is now the CEO of this financial services firm.

The next Saturday will be their first opportunity to see Chelsea win a trophy. Liverpool will be the opponent in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
