On Monday, runners were preparing for the Boston Marathon. This marks the return to springtime for the race since the pandemic.
Race Director Dave McGillivray sent a group from Massachusetts National Guard, which walks the course every year at 6 a.m. to announce the start of the 126th Boston Marathon in Hopkinton. He assured them that the “comeback was greater than the settingback”.
McGillivray saidHe said in an interview that “it is a new norm” with some pandemic protocols still in effect, like requiring participants to get vaccinated. He saidBecause “we’re about see that come true,” he uses the catchphrase.

The elite fields follow shortly after 9:15 a.m. with the wheelchair divisions. Eleven former champions will be competing. McGillivray saidIt is “one of the most assembled pro fields of all times.”
Only six months have passed since the athletes ran 26.2 miles (42.2 km) to Copley Square in Boston, for the oldest and most prestigious annual race.
Pandemic caused the 2020 race to be cancelled. This was the first cancellation of the event since 1897. The 2021 edition was also postponed and held in October. This was the inaugural edition of the marathon in fall. Social distancing was easier and the crowds were smaller, but no less enthusiastic.
On Monday, Patriots’ Day, more than 28,000 runners signed up for the race. It is the marathon’s traditional place on the calendar, on a day that marks the start of Revolutionary War.
A third of the National Guard marched in October too. Capt. Gus Ashton (29). saidHe was thrilled with the turnout last year, and is eager to return and see even more people.
“It’s still not normal, but it’s getting closer to normal,” he said. said.
Boston Athletic Association celebrates the 50th anniversary the first women’s official division. However, the eight women who ran the race alongside the men in that year weren’t the first to do so.

Ukrainians who registered for the race were allowed to defer to another race or receive a refund if they couldn’t or didn’t want to run this race. Belarusian and Russian residents have been informed they are not invited.
