Blue Jays’ comeback bid falls short in narrow loss to Brewers

Corbin Burnes pitched into eighth inning. Andrew McCutchen, Mike Brosseau, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat Toronto Blue Jays 5-4.

The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner extended the streak to three games but he wasn’t as sharp as in the 2-0 win against the Cardinals on Monday.

Burnes (6-4), in his first career start, allowed Toronto home runs to Matt Chapman & Bo Bichette. Cavan Biggio also scored an RBI groundout. He struck out nine times and walked 2. Then, he turned over a 5-3 advantage with runners at first and second, and two outs in eighth to Devin Williams who fanned Alejandro Kirk.

Chapman doubled with 2 outs and scored on Lourdes Gururiel Jr.’s base hit off Josh Hader. But the closer pulled off his 22nd save when Gabriel Moreno grounded to first.

Five days prior, Burnes (6-4), had stymied Cardinals on two hits and two walks in seven innings.

The Brewers gave him a 5-0 lead in the early stages.

Brosseau’s homer led to the third chased Blue Jays pitcher Yusei Kikichi (2-4).

McCutchen’s sixth home run of the season was a two-run effort in the second. Willy Adames hit an RBI single prior to McCutchen’s homer.

Tyrone Taylor’s hit drove a run into the first for Milwaukee.

Kikuchi allowed five runs on six hits, two earned, with five strikeouts, one walk, and a hit batter. In his seven last starts, he was 1-3.

The rest of Milwaukee’s game was won by Toronto’s bullpen. Trent Thorton took over for Kikuchi, and handled the third- and fourth innings. Max Castillo pitched scoreless balls in the fifth and sixth innings, seventh, and eighth innings.

Kirk was Toronto’s DH. His hand was shaved by Jonathan Davis in the seventh, during Friday night’s 9-4 win. Kirk remained at the plate during Davis’ at-bat. However, he was replaced in the bullpen by Moreno. Precautionary Xrays were negative

Blue Jays redesign Fourth of July caps, and remove stars

The Blue Jays announced earlier on Saturday that they had altered the design of their upcoming Fourth of July ballcap.

Original plans called for all 30 Major League Baseball teams to wear special hats with American emblems to commemorate Independence Day in the United States. Blue Jays fans protested against Canada’s only MLB team wearing star-spangled caps after previews of the caps were released.

A Blue Jays spokesperson said that Canada is a distinct market and that the club worked with MLB and New Era to create a cap that reflects the diversity of Toronto.

The cap is still predominantly white and blue with blue stripes, but the stars are gone.

Toronto will begin a three-game series against the Athletics in Oakland on July 4.

The Blue Jays will continue to wear their red uniforms Canada Day as they face the Tampa Bay Rays. This is a rare five game series.
