Homegrown talent Osorio, Priso lift Toronto FC over Atlanta

Jonathan Osorio started the scoring early, and Ralph Priso won the final match as Toronto FC defeated Atlanta United 2-1.

Osorio scored the goal in the eighth minute, after Jayden Nelson passed him into the box. He beat his defender to score and it was past Atlanta goalkeeper Rocco Rivas-Novo.

Luiz De Araujo ended Atlanta’s offensive woes at the 57th minute. He ran down the right side, past his defender, and beat Quentin Westberg from Toronto to tie the game at 1-1.

Priso was able find the back of his net in the 78th minutes to break the Major League Soccer deadlock.

Toronto (5-8-3), improved to 5-3-0 at BMO Field. This is where it has enjoyed most of its success this season. Toronto FC will next host Columbus Crew on Wednesday as it continues its five-game homestand.

Toronto had only won one of its eight MLS matches in the past, the Chicago Fire being the Chicago Fire’s sole victory. Toronto built on the momentum it had gained this season after a 4-0 win over CF Montreal at the Canadian Championship semifinals.

TFC’s win is possible thanks to Ralph PrisoMbongue, a homegrown goal in MLS.

Both TFC goals were accomplished by Canadians. TFC won 2-1 thanks to Ralph PrisoMbongue and Jonathan Osorio.

Despite the match having three goals between the sides, there were many missed scoring opportunities.

Atlanta struggled to connect with each other on passes off corner and free kicks, and Atlanta was unable to put the ball on goal for much of the match.

Toronto, however, had its fair share missed chances close and on goal.

In the 12th minutes, Nelson advanced the ball with a man advantage and eventually found Osorio going down on the left side. But the ball went out bounds as Osorio tried to beat his goal line defender. He missed again two minutes later and the ball went out of bounds.

Forward Jesus Jimenez, one the most prolific scorers in the MLS, also missed a few opportunities. There were a lot of them coming in the box.

Lorenzo Insigne, an Italian international, was present at the game. The crowd cheered and applauded him when he was shown on the big screen. On Friday, the 31-year-old signed with Toronto FC earlier this year. He is expected make his debut on July 9th.

Montreal back in win column

CF Montreal are back in win column after beating Charlotte FC 2-1 on Saturday night at Saputo Stadium to take second place in Eastern Conference Major League Soccer.

Mathieu Choiniere and Romell Quioto scored for Montreal (8-2), while Guzman Corujo was Charlotte’s (6-9-2) sole goal scorer.

Montreal have a strong habit of starting games at their home incredibly strong. This one was no different. They dominated the ball and forced Charlotte back every time.

Montreal was able to break the deadlock in just seven minutes. The hosts took the lead with their first shot from Quioto’s. It was in the bottom right corner.

CF Montreal moves to 2nd place in East with victory over Charlotte FC

CF Montreal wins 2-1 over Charlotte FC with Mathieu Choiniere’s goal at 47 minutes.

Charlotte only took three minutes to respond to Corujo’s defensive mishap.

The other side of that habit has been that — following their strong start — they would take their foot off the gas and invite opposing pressure. Charlotte was more than happy to finish the first half.

Montreal seemed to have found their tempo after the restart. Two minutes into the half, Quioto found Choiniere — a halftime substitution — in space, who then launched a perfect shot into the opposite-side corner.

Charlotte pushed for an equalizer and their best chance came with seven minutes remaining. Karol Swiderski had two point-blank shots — one saved by Sebastian Breza and the other was launched over the bar.

Montreal fans celebrated more than just three points. They also saw the return Mason Toye, who missed the past 10 months because of a series of injuries.

Both teams have midweek games next, as Montreal travels on June 29 to Seattle to face Sounders. Charlotte will play host to Austin FC at Bank of America Stadium on June 30.
