U2’s Bono and the Edge perform in Ukraine subway station | Bono

Bono, frontman of U2 in Ireland and Edge performed a 40-minute concert at a Kyiv subway station. He also thanked Ukrainians for fighting for freedom from Russia.

“Your president leads the world in the cause of freedom right now … the people of Ukraine are not just fighting for your own freedom, you’re fighting for all of us who love freedom,” Bono told a crowd of up to 100 gathered inside the Khreshchatyk metro station.

Russia moved towards Kyiv on the 24th of February after it invaded Ukraine. At the end of March, Russia withdrew its forces near Kiev to concentrate its forces on the east.

Even though Russia continues to launch missile strikes in Ukraine, some life is returning to Kyiv, even though the sirens of air raids continue to sound.

Bono rallied the crowd during his performances.

“This evening, 8 May, shots will ring out in the Ukraine sky, but you’ll be free at last. They can take your lives, but they can never take your pride,” he said.
