It’s not newsThe world of fintech has seen a shift in recent years. After financial technology startups saw their fortunes rise during the venture capital boom that loosely wrapped as 2021 came to a close, they’re now suffering from a slump of a similar scale.
The damage is not one-dimensional. The pain in the fintech industry is multifactorial and varied. Today I will be going through key data points that are circling my head. These include the latest information from Coinbase and Klarna. They provide an overview of where neobanks are in the current valuation climate and what the changing market means to the venture capital dollars that have poured into this sector over the past few years of high-profile private-market investment.

As you can see, fintech was the hottest thing last year. This fact may now be a problem for startups and venture capital.
TechCrunch reported earlier in the year, citing CB Insights dataAccording to the report, global venture capital funding grew to $621billion in 2021 from a modest $294billion in 2020. Fintech investment increased to $131.5billion in 4,969 deals, up from $49billion invested in 3,491 deals for 2020.
The money at stake here is in the hundreds or billions of dollars in terms of invested capital and likely trillions if we consider the value startups that were successful during times of good times. (Recall that Crunchbase estimatesThe global total value of all unicorns is $4.6 trillion. However this number may include some zombie valuations not relevant in a more conservative investment market.
Refreshed about the capital that went into fintech, let’s now digest the less-than-winsome news blowing off the high seas of startups building financial technology.
What’s fintech revenue worth?
Software valuations rose during 2020-2021’s venture capital peak. Every company wanted to be a tech firm at minimum and a software business at best. That’s because the value of software revenue, measured on a per-dollar basis, rose sharply. A company could claim $30, $50, or even $100 for every dollar of software revenue it generates.
People worked to either create software incomes or rebrand other revenues. This is a problem for many fintech firms, as it has been discovered that a lot of their income was not accounted for. Not softwareInstead, you can use another software. Facilitated. However, the two substances are not identical.
