Oettinger posts 29-save shutout to lead Stars past Flames
Jake Oettinger, goaltender for the Dallas Stars, had a 29-save shutout that led to a 2-0 win against the Calgary Flames. The Dallas Stars are now 1-1 in their playoff series.
Joe Pavelski scored, and Michael Raffl added a goal in the empty net for the Stars.
The best-of-7 conference quarterfinal series is headed to Dallas for Saturday’s Game 3 at American Airlines Arena and Monday’s Game 4 at American Airlines Arena. The Flames opened the series Tuesday with a 1-0 victory.
Oettinger was 23 years old and earned his first shutout in only his second career playoff game. Jacob Markstrom of Calgary stopped 21 of 22 shots during the loss.
Calgary (50-21-11) was the first place finisher in the Pacific Division. Dallas (46-30-6) took the top wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
In the third period, the Flames outshot Stars 12-7 but could not score a goal. Markstrom brought in an extra attacker and Raffl scored to an empty net with just 69 seconds remaining.
Calgary was outplayed in opening period. However, Calgary had more scoring opportunities for an 11-7 advantage in shots in the second. Oettinger denied the Flames, but they didn’t manage to get their sticks on any of the few rebounds that Dallas’ goaltender allowed.
Stars head coach Rick Bowness kept forwards Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin and others on separate lines to increase offense.
The Flames were outshot 9-6 by the visitors in the first period. Calgary was unable to escape its zone because of the forecheck. In the opening 40 minutes, the Stars had more hits (25) than in Game 1 (20).
Pavelski scored the Stars first goal in the series at 7:47, after he failed to score a goal in Game 1. The goal was scored on a Flames defensive-zone turnover.
Noah Hanifin, a defenseman, put the puck on the boards and onto Jason Robertson’s stick at the blue line. Pavelski deflected Robertson’s shot above Markstrom’s glove.
Johnny Gaudreau’s goal on a breakaway was scored 43 seconds after puck drop.
Matthew Tkachuk, John Klingberg, and others renewed hostilities after the first game in Calgary in which Tkachuk crushed Klingberg to the boards behind Calgary’s net in the first half.
Tkachuk checked Klingberg and gave him a roughing sanction in the aftermath Gaudreau’s goal that was disallowed. This sent both men to the box.
The Stars were held scoreless by a pair power-play opportunities and were 0-for-7 during the first two games. The Flames went 0-for-3 Thursday and scored one goal from the power-play on eight opportunities through the first two games.
