Kurt Busch takes Jordan Brand to victory lane at Kansas

KANSAS CITY (Kan.)

Kurt Busch was slowing driving his Jordan Brand-styled ride towards victory lane in Kansas Speedway’s Kansas Speedway on Sunday, when Denny Hamlin stopped him and ducked his head through a window. said: “We did it.”

They did.

After enduring a tiring day of tire failure, Busch pulled ahead of Kyle Larson to take the lead with eight laps remaining. He then won the NASCAR Cup Series championship to win at Kansas for the first-ever time. This victory will give Hamlin’s 23XI Racing team and NBA legend Michael Jordan their second win.

Busch stated, “That’s what’s most satisfying about helping these guys win.” said. “It’s all team work. This is not something I do on my own.

Larson was the dominant car and rode the fastest line around the mile-and a half oval. But Busch could put his Toyota almost anywhere he wanted. The effort paid off as the two cars were facing each other with eight minutes remaining. Busch was able to squeeze Larson into his Toyota and he lost just enough momentum and brushed the wall to win the lead.

Busch pulled his No. Busch pulled his No. 45 car, one of Jordan’s numbers throughout his career. He halted at the start-finish line and then climbed out of the window. The Jumpman logo was splashed across his firesuit.

This was 23XI’s second win after Bubba Wallace won last year at Talladega. It also came at an unexpected time: neither of the drivers of the team had been in the top 10 this season.

Hamlin: “You know, as an organization, we kind of let these guys Down — I’m talking to Bubba, Kurt, and all the mistakes that we’d made in pit road whatnot,” Hamlin said. “But let’s not forget the positives. Kurt is a great guy. Jordan Brand’s first race. I am so jealous that he can drive that car and then have that feeling so fast there. It’s different.”

Busch was a smooth finisher.

“He never got into me. Larson: “He never got into me. said. “It was great racing with Kurt for the last half of this race. “I was trying to do my best the entire time.”

No kidding. Larson almost lost his balance with 85 minutes to go as he raced with Busch for the lead in Turn 2.

Larson: “Just hard racing to the win.” said. “I was struggling to get through traffic, but he was capable of getting by and from there. I just wanted second. I fought hard today.”

A major storyline early in the week was how the Next Gen car would perform during its Kansas debut. It was particularly important because several drivers, including Joey Logano, had experienced problems with their rears in practice.

The problems returned during Sunday’s second phase.

William Byron, who was pushed out of the race by Logano last week in the contentious finish at Darlington was running near the front, when his tire went off. Tyler Reddick, pole sitter outside, suffered a rear-end problem and touched the wall as Byron limped down pit street. Martin Truex Jr. experienced the same problem with his tire on the final lap.

“Our engineers met with everyone who was having problems in practice,” saidGreg Stucker was Goodyear’s director for racing. He had advised teams to raise rear air pressures in preparation for the loads.

“We wanted to make everyone aware of the situation.”

Erik Jones was faced with a very different problem. His team couldn’t remove the rear-lug nut. It tried everything, including wrenches, to no avail. That’s a hard blow for a Petty GMS Motorsports Team that was just outside the playoffs.

Kyle Busch, the father of Lennix Key, was able to avoid tire trouble and beat Ross Chastain, Chase Elliott, and win Sunday’s first stage. Kurt, his elder brother, beat him to victory on Sunday’s second stage, with Elliott coming in third.

Elliott was then hit by the same tire issue, sending him spinning around the track with 70 laps remaining. Elliott was fortunate to retain his No. Elliott was fortunate to keep his No. 9 before he came to rest in the muddy field.

Kyle Busch had hoped that he would be able to bring home a trophy for his baby girl. He and Samantha welcomed their daughter after a long, public battle with infertility. He ended up taking third place despite driving a strong car throughout the day.

Perhaps her uncle will be able to bring the trophy home for her.

Kurt Busch, “I finally conquered the track,” said. “I cannot believe it.”

BEST OF THE REST

Christopher Bell made it to fifth place with his third pole. Truex, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Alex Bowman finished sixth, with Wallace, Chastain, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Wallace finishing in the top 10.

SLAVA UKRAINI

Josh Bilicki had the Ukrainian flag colours on his No. Spire Motorsports donated a car number 77 to support humanitarian efforts in war-torn Ukraine. The paint scheme included the insignia and insignia for the Ukrainian American Coordinating Council.
