Kickers, running backs take spotlight on Day 3 of NFL draft

Las Vegas, the “Entertainment Capital of the World”, doesn’t appear to be the right place for an NFL draft devoid of top quarterback prospects.
It didn’t matter though because, as league personnel predicted, the 2022 crop would be so strong that even the final four rounds were full of highlights.
Although they didn’t include passers as much, such was the quality QBs.
As the last day of selections began, two punters went and one placekicker was there before any other quarterbacks. Perhaps it’s not surprising that Cade York (LSU placekicker) was ranked as high as No. 124 overall, followed six spots later by Penn State punter Jordan Stout to Baltimore. No. 133 to Tampa Bay it was punter Jake Camarda of Georgia — four spots before the fifth quarterback in total, Western Kentucky’s Bailey Zappe, headed to New England.
It’s not hard to forget that the Patriots had some success with a late-round quarterback. Was he named?
“With the draft it’s always an upswing, but I had a good idea that i was going to be Raven.” saidStout will be competing against veteran Sam Koch. “I’m very excited about it.”
“One of my biggest strengths is the fact that special teams are always very successful with Ravens,”

True. True.
York saw what Cleveland wanted in a kicker when there was a game at stake: complete confidence.
“I think I’m the best kicker in this draft, because I have been capable of making big kicks even in difficult situations,” he stated. said. “I’ve been called out to do a lot long field goals in difficult situations and still managed to get good results. That is what I consider the best about me.”
Camarda was regarded as the best punter in America by many scouts. Camarda was the 11th national champions player.
Camarda said, “It certainly prepared me to the next level. I played at Georgia for four year, playing in every major game you can think of.” The Bucs are definitely a team that is looking to make big runs. It’s definitely something I think with my history of playing in big games, big moments, and I sure think it’s going help to play being with the Bucs.”

The opening pick in the sixth round was Buffalo’s Matt Araiza from San Diego State. He’ll switch from San Diego’s pristine terrain to Western New York’s frigid Western New York.
“I’m very excited for this challenge.” saidAraiza, who wants to one day play punt, placekick, and hold in the NFL. “I love it. It is my greatest job in the NFL to out-punt other players. My goal is to bring better field position for my team than the one we are playing against.
“I believe leg strength and athleticism can make a big difference in these conditions. These are two areas I take pride in and will continue to improve. So I am excited and confident that I will be able do well in these circumstances.

Chicago also selected Trenton Gill from North Carolina State as the 255th punter.
It is not a new idea to include running backs in proceedings. Many highly skilled ball carriers were taken in Round 4. After Tampa Bay made tight end Cade Otton of Washington the leadoff pick — Rob Gronkowski has not publicly committed to return — Houston grabbed RB Dameon Pierce of Florida. From there, the likes of Zamir White of Georgia, Isaiah Spiller of Texas A&M, Pierre Strong, a standout from South Dakota State of the FCS and Hassan Haskins of Michigan went off the board.
However, the fifth round began with Washington grabbing North Carolina QB Sam Howell. Howell was projected to be a higher selection than a year ago but did not have an exceptional final season for Tar Heels.
Howell said it was “a little stressful” sitting through four rounds.
Howell said, “I was just waiting and hanging out and just waiting to get a call. It was Washington who called.” said. “This is the perfect spot for me. It’s a team that I have wanted to play for since the beginning.
“I will continue to be me”
Zappe was not aware of any comparisons to New England’s sixth-rounder at No. Tom Brady.
He stated, “I’m continuing to be me.” said. “I’m not trying to be someone else. I’m going to go to work every day to get 1% better. This is how I see it. I don’t worry about the critics and naysayers. I have the Patriots belief in me and the coaches, players and organization believe in me. Those are the people that I will try to prove wrong, that this pick is the right one.
Pittsburgh’s addition of Michigan State’s tight end/Hback/running back Connor Heyward was a heartwarming story. Cam Heyward, the Steelers’ defensive lineman of choice, is already a star, while their father Craig Heyward, a former pro footballer, played 11 seasons.
Cam Heyward described the Steelers as a family. Naturally, Cam Heyward explained to Connor that his first job was carrying around older brother’s shoulder pads.
A quarterback.
It was no surprise that the Georgia Bulldogs, national champions, dominated this event overall. Six rounds of selections saw them set a new record: 15 were selected, eight on defense and six on offense. They also had punter Camarda, who was the final number. Cincinnati had nine draftees more than Ohio State, five less.
Texas was the only state to have had a player draft since the 1970 merger. The other was in 2014 and the last class for Mack Brown, who coached the Longhorns to their 2005 national championship.
Texas was not the only Big 12 school to lose out in the football-crazed Lone Star State. It had been under Brown’s third coach. TCU lost its pick for the first-time since 2008, when the Horned Frogs’ 20-year coach Gary Patterson decided to leave.
