Joy Drop: The power of the WNBA and playoff perseverance

Hello! Hello! Friday is here and we’re all looking forward to a relaxing weekend. Except for Leafs fans, who are excited for Game 7 on Saturday (CBC, CBCSports.ca at 7 p.m. ET) against the Tampa Bay Lightning, reigning Stanley Cup champions. All NHL fans, good luck!

I believe in never giving in, and I believe it is even more important when we are in the playoffs. Talaya Crawford is an example of such a person. I was thrilled to witness this youngster win the Omaha High School Track Race. She lost her shoe. She composed herself in that moment, ran back, put the shoe on again and continued the race — She won.

Terence Crawford is the world boxing champ and Talaya’s father. He posted the video to Instagram. He said that Talaya let everything go even when faced with adversity. This is such a lovely reminder to keep your head up and go on. Pure joy.

The 26th season of WNBA began last week, and the games have been a huge success. You can watch Canada’s games in a variety of ways. There is always something to watch. league passAvailable for purchase (be aware of geo-blocking! Also TSN is broadcastingThe games. I love the hype surrounding the WNBA, and the games. Canadian connection.

I wanted to also point out some beautiful jewelry the WNBA promoted. Baublebar. NBA Canada provided some pieces for preparation of the season to prominent sports media personalities.

Last season, the orange WNBA hoodie proved to be the most desired accessory. Perhaps this year it will be jewelry with the WNBA logowoman. Anything that promotes and supports women’s sports will always be something I love. If it sparkles, even better!

While we are celebrating women’s basketball, I am so happy to share the news of the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association (MWBA) starting this weekend! My colleague Myles Dichter wrote a piece about this. A brand new league, and why it matters.

Many elite women’s sports athletes find that there is no place to continue playing after they finish their university careers. This league offers top-tier athletes the opportunity to continue playing the sport that they love. Although I love the Maritimes, I find it hard to be happy about news of women’s sports in the region.

The weather is beautiful! I hope you get outside and get some fresh air.

I’m leaving you with a lovely song by Sarah McLachlan (one of my favourite Haligonians).
