Zverev was attempting to win his second consecutive Madrid title and third overall.

Alcaraz was the youngest Madrid winner, and also the second youngest person to win two Masters 1000 awards after Nadal’s victories in Monte Carlo and Rome 2005. Alcaraz was already the youngest person to reach the top 10, as Nadal did in 2005.

Alcaraz won the seventh consecutive match against a top-10 player, his fourth tour-leading title of the year. Alcaraz also holds the record for most wins with 28 – one more than Stefanos Tisipas.

Alcaraz had earlier this year won his first Masters 1000 tournament at Miami. He had also won in Rio de Janeiro and Barcelona. His first career title was in Umag last.

Alcaraz lost three matches this season against Sebastian Korda (Monte Carlo), Nadal (India Wells) and Matteo Berrettini (Australian Open).

Alcaraz maintained his high energy throughout the match against Zverev, despite losing three sets to Nadal and Djokovic.

He did not face any break points, and converted four of eight against Zverev. Alcaraz made 11 unforced mistakes, compared with Zverev’s 25.
