Henderson lingers as Korea’s Chun surges to British Open lead

Gee Chun makes another strong run at a major.

The halfway lead in the Women’s British Open was taken by the South Korean golfer after she shot a 5-under-66 in Friday’s second round. This put her in a position to challenge the British for a second major title and fourth overall.

Chun shot 134 for an 8-under total, one shot better than Ashleigh Buhai of South Africa and Madelene Sagstrom of Sweden, who shot 65.

Inbee, also from South Korea, was seven-time major winner and was back in action after scoring 67.

Despite consecutive rounds of 75 on weekends, Chun won the Women’s PGA Championship at Congressional in July. She carded six birdies in her round at Muirfield.

Brooke Henderson, Canada, from Smiths Falls, Ont. won the previous major, Evian Championship, France. She put together her second consecutive 1-under-70 round to tie for 17th.

Fellow Canadian Maude-Aimée LeBlanc was tied for 66th after also shooting 1-under on the day.

Sunday’s winner will be paid more than $1million US, but Chun is the one who wins. said A slightly lower cash prize also motivated her.

Chun said, “Before starting the tournament, my caddie Dean (and I) talked about the course. After that, we had a little bit more betting.” said. “If I make a round without bogey, he’s said He’s going to buy dinner for me and pay me 100 dollars per day. This is like setting a new goal each round. This mindset was very helpful on the course. Although I did have two bogeys in the last two days, I am determined to continue my quest to be bogey-free.

First round leaders are eliminated

Three of Chun’s four LPGA Tour triumphs have come at majors like the 2016 Evian Championship or 2015 U.S. Women’s Open.

On Friday, she was even helped by one of the wind gusts that make Scottish Links golf so challenging.

Chun: “I have great reasons to love the Scottish wind right now.” said. “My ball was at the edge of the hole today and it dropped within three seconds. “Now I can really enjoy the Scottish wind.”

Buhai was on track to capture the halfway lead. She made an eagle on the 11th and had four birdies to race to turn in 30, but she couldn’t make any more gains after that and she dropped her only shot for the day on the last.

Hinako Shibuno, overnight leader, followed her 65 with a 73 to finish four shots behind the pace.

Jessica Korda was second after the first round. She settled for a score of 74 and was tied for 17th.

Laura Davies, a four-time major winner, was making her 42nd appearance at this event at the age 58. She had an 81, which included a 10.
