Haskins apparently ran out of gas before being fatally hit

FORT LAUDERDALE (Fla.

Dwayne haskins’ wife called Florida 911 dispatchers just after his death. According to recordings released Wednesday, she said her husband had run out gas and was concerned that he wouldn’t answer the phone.

Kalabrya Hakins called from Pittsburgh, unaware of the accident. She told a Florida Highway Patrol dispatcher that her husband, a 24-year-old, had called her from Fort Lauderdale to tell her he was walking to get gas, and would call her back. She told the dispatcher that she tried calling him, but he didn’t answer.

She stated, “I’m just asking for someone to go to the area and check if his vehicle is there and if everything has happened to him.” said, her voice breaking. She said, “It is not like him” to not return the call. said.

Numerous panicked calls had been received by the highway patrol about the accident at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport around dawn. However, the dispatcher didn’t seem to be aware that Haskins had been found dead by paramedics. He had been training in South Florida with Steelers teammates.

Kalabrya Hakins was told by the dispatcher that “I don’t want you panicking, but I will be honest with you.” “We do have an accident on the highway, but it is not clear if this is your husband.”

The dispatcher told her to “hold tight” as she sought more information. Kalabrya Hakins, who was on hold, starts to cry and pray, but her words are mostly unintelligible.

The dispatcher calls back. Kalabrya Haskins was told by the dispatcher to remain at her phone so that someone could call her.

According to Wednesday’s accident report, witnesses claimed that Haskins tried to cross the highway and was impeded by the truck. He was struck by the truck, which also hit a car.

Haskins was a star at Ohio State in 2018, setting many school records and being named MVP in both Big Ten Championship games and the Buckeyes’ Rose Bowl victory over the Washington Huskies.
