Grizzlies star Ja Morant grabs NBA’s most improved player award

Ja Morant won rookie of the year 2020. He promised he would improve.

He’s done it exactly.

The NBA’s Most Improved Players was Monday’s second major award for the Memphis Grizzlies’ guard. He is the first Grizzlies player to receive the award — and the first player in league history to have won both rookie of the year and most improved.

Morant: “It’s definitely major-time.” said.

Morant had career highs in scoring (27.4 per game), rebounds (5.7), steals (1.2) and field-goal shooting (49.5 percent). He averaged 19.1 points per game last season and made that big leap while playing almost the same amount.

Morant: “This award goes for me, but it feels like it’s an effort by the whole team.” said.

The Grizzlies had three players get votes for MIP — besides Morant, Desmond Bane was fifth and Jaren Jackson Jr. was 10th. This trio helped Memphis reach the No. The No. 2 seed in Western Conference, and Phoenix’s second-best record in league play.

Memphis tied Memphis’s record for the best regular season mark at 56-26.

Morant stated, “That basically just shows our overall work ethic as a group.” said. “We all push one another. All of us want to do better. I think we all have the same ‘never satisfied’ mindset. That’s why you’ll see three people from the same team vote for this award.

Morant was not an All-Star in this season’s first season. From a panel consisting of 100 journalists and broadcasters covering the league, Morant finished with 221 points. He received five points for a first-place vote and three points for a second.

Dejounte Murray, San Antonio, was second with 183 points. Darius Garland, Cleveland with 178 was third. Murray appeared on 63 ballots. Garland appeared in 62 ballots.

Morant appeared on 51 of the 100 ballots — but got far more first-place votes than anyone else. Murray received 38 votes while Murray got 20. Jordan Poole, from Golden State, got fifth with 15.

Improvements that lead to a big year

Morant, 22 years old saidHe spent this off-season focusing on improving his three point range and his midrange game.

Morant said, “Those were basically the two main areas I worked this summer.” saidDuring the televised announcement. It allowed me to make a huge leap in my game, which you can see by my scoring.”

In all, 12 players got votes. Bane was awarded seven first-place votes. Philadelphia’s TyreseMaxey received six first-place votes. Charlotte’s Miles Bridges took seventh place and won three first-place ballots.

Anfernee Simons, Portland, was eighth. Then came Robert Williams III of Boston, Jackson, Jalen Brunson of Dallas, and Max Strus of Miami.

Morant now has the opportunity to focus on the league MVP award. So far, only one player — Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetoktounmpo — has won Most Improved and then gone on to win that trophy.

Morant stated, “That’s the goal.” said.
