Griner’s extended detention disappointing to her WNBA family

Sandy Brondello of New York was heading to Friday’s shootaround with her team when she heard that Russia had extended Brittney griner’s pretrial detention by another 30 days.

Griner was originally scheduled to be released on May 19. Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist playing for the Phoenix Mercury was allegedly detained in Moscow in February after her luggage contained vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. Griner, aged 31, is facing drug smuggling allegations that could land her a maximum of 10 years in prison.

Griner’s case may be able to go to trial within the 30-day extension.

Brondello’s latest news didn’t take away the bitterness of Brondello’s latest news. He coached Griner in Phoenix for eight years before taking over the New York Liberty.

Brondello stated, “Obviously we are very disappointed that they are extending BG’s stay in Russia. We’ve got to make every effort to get her out.” said. “We need to liberate BG. We need her here. We need the government to do something sooner than we think.

The 6-foot-9 Griner was handcuffed in an orange hoodie with her face down and was wearing a hoodie.

Although the extension was not unexpected, all league players saw Griner’s photos and video. saidIt was very difficult to see.

“It was a gut punch. “I saw the photos.” saidFever guard Danielle Robinson played in Phoenix with Griner during a season. “You get a chance to get to know her, her family, what her passions are, and what she stands for. You can see that she is a person who cares deeply about others. It’s very sad.

Ariel Atkins, who was with Griner at the Tokyo Olympics last year, saidAlthough she may not be able to understand Griner’s entire case, she said that she wanted to do everything she could to help her return home. Just a devastating situation. It’s hard to imagine what her family is feeling right now.

Cherelle Griner, Griner’s spouse, graduated from North Carolina Central University in North Carolina earlier this month. saidMuch about their stress on their families.

Brianna Turner, Mercury Guard, recalls Griner’s good deeds. She posted a Twitter story hours later of Griner saving her food and giving it to a homeless person.

Turner wrote, “Ofcourse with her on my thoughts I thought to do that today.” A free meal can sometimes make someone’s day. Do something kind for someone you don’t know today.

Lindsay Kagawa Colas, Griner’s agent, started posting on Twitter two week ago a countdown of Griner’s detention overseas. Friday marked the 85th day.

Kagawa Colas, a Kagawa Colas spokesperson, tweeted hours after the extension that Griner’s team expected the government to “use every option available to immediately and safely bring Griner back home.”

Others are following Griner’s lead, tweeting about Griner being detained, including Breanna Stewart (Seattle Storm All-Star) and Dawn Staley (South Carolina coach).

All seem determined that Griner’s name, and his detention, remain in people’s minds. Vickie Johnson is Wings coach. said”Let the league handle it, and her attorneys.”

Johnson stated, “The only thing I can do, Brittney is my friend, and I will continue to pray for Brittney and her family.” said. “I hope she is OK both mentally and physically.”
