Fitzpatrick a winner again at Brookline as U.S. Open champion

BROOKLINE, Mass. –
Matt Fitzpatrick from England is again a champion at The Country Club, this year with the grandest of trophyies.
A U.S. Amateur champion in 2013. Sunday’s U.S. Open champion
Brookline was in a three-way fight that ended at the wire. Fitzpatrick won with a great break and a much better shot on hole 15. This gave him a two-shot swing. He was even more clutch at the fairway bunker on 18th, which set up par for a 2-under-68.
Victory was not assured until Will Zalatoris’s 15-foot birdie on the 18th, which he made with incredible resolve, just missed the left side cup, put him to his knees. Zalatoris finished second in the second consecutive major.
Masters champion Scottie Scheffler never recovered after back-to-back double bogeys to begin the back nine. He had a 25 foot birdie chance on 18th but it just missed and he was one behind.
Fitzpatrick is now the second man to win the U.S. Open. Amateur and U.S. Open, Fitzpatrick joins Jack Nicklaus who won the trick at Pebble Beach. Juli Inkster won both the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Prairie Dunes and the U.S. Women’s Open.
