Defending champion Mickelson withdraws from PGA Championship

Phil Mickelson withdrew Friday’s PGA Championship. He decided to extend his golf hiatus following incendiary remarks about a Saudi funded rival league he supports as well as the PGA Tour he accuses of greed.
Mickelson was the oldest champion in 161 majors when he won at Kiawah Islands at the age of 50.
Since Feb. 6, at the Saudi International, he has been absent from public view.
The PGA of America made his announcement via social media.
Only the third PGA champion has not defended his title in 75 years. Tiger Woods missed 2008 due to reconstructive knee surgery. Ben Hogan missed 1949 after his car was struck by a bus.
