Chelsea bidders reveal new details as sale process heats up

Final bids are being prepared to win European champion Chelsea. New business figures are being added as consortia, as the process to end Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich’s control is advanced.

Four bids have been made to purchase Chelsea. They could sell it for 3 billion pounds (US$4 Billion) considering the interest in the club since Abramovich listed the west London Premier League team up for sale six months ago.

Steve Pagliuca is the co-owner of the NBA’s Boston Celtics. He made the announcement on Tuesday to confirm his plans for becoming a Premier League owner. This could lead to him having to sell his 55% stake at Atalanta’s Serie A team.

The American cannot control the two clubs that are participating in the same UEFA European competition. Atalanta, however, is not in qualifying contention for next year.

“Later this week, we will submit a substantial and credible bid proposal,”Pagliuca made the statement in a statement. “One that we expect will meet the respective requirements and regulations of the Premier League, UK Government and UEFA — and we pledge to honor our commitment to credibility and good guardianship of Chelsea Football Club from day one.”

Another bid, which is being led by Tom Ricketts (Chicago Cubs baseball owner), has been shrouded by criticism over Islamophobic remarks by Joe Ricketts that were revealed in leaked emails three year ago. The Ricketts family has tried to distance themselves from the patriarch. On Tuesday, another business leader was announced as a new lead figure in the bid.

Karan Bilimoria, a Chelsea supporter who founded the Cobra beer business in west London in 1989, will become a director of club if Ricketts bid goes through.

“Tom and the wider group have a proven track record of running successful sports teams and a strong vision for both the club and the local community,”Bilimoria made the statement.

Bilimoria is the Confederation of British Industry’s outgoing president.

“We have always been clear that having local expertise and perspectives on our bid is vital,”Tom Ricketts made the statement. “Given Lord Bilimoria’s unparalleled credentials and his love for Chelsea, he is the perfect addition to our team.”

One rival bid includes an American investor in a Premier League club: Josh Harris has a 17% interest in the south London club Crystal Palace. Harris, who is also the owner in the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers is part of a consortium led by Sebastian Coe and Martin Broughton (ex-chairman of British Airways and Liverpool)

A fourth consortium is made up of Todd Boehly, part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Hansjorg Wiss, a Swiss billionaire Hansjorg, and Jonathan Goldstein. Jonathan Goldstein is a London-based property investment investor who is CEO at Cain International.

After being sanctioned in Britain, Abramovich was forced to sell Chelsea and his assets were frozen in a crackdown against oligarchs in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The sale must be approved by the government. It is being managed by the Raine Group merchant bank in New York. Abramovich will not be able to profit from the sale proceeds.

“Our role is to consider an application for an amended license that authorises a sale of the club when it comes forward with a preferred bidder,”The British government released a statement.

Chelsea has won 21 trophies under Abramovich’s ownership. He lavishly invested to make Chelsea one of Europe’s most successful clubs.

It could be that a new owner is able to continue substantial funding for players, which could impact which bid prevails.

“Our first focus and goal is to make strategic investments to continue competing for championships and trophies,” Pagliuca said. “We will support the players and managers of Chelsea to make them habitual winners and title contenders in the Premier League and Champions League,” Pagliuca said.

“In addition, we will continue to invest in the youth academy to develop the stars of the future and we would not be in this process if we did not have an exciting and inclusive vision for Chelsea.”

Stamford Bridge must be renovated in the long-term to attract more corporate sponsors and fans. Chelsea is the Premier League’s most successful club, but it has the smallest and least modern stadium. Plans for a rebuilding the venue of 41,000 capacity were put on hold in 2018 by Abramovich due to British-Russian diplomatic tensions.

“Not only are we committed to remaining at the home of Chelsea, Stamford Bridge,” Pagliuca said, “but we are inspired to renovate or redevelop the stadium. Chelsea is a world-class team, in a world-class city, with world-class fans: it deserves a world-class stadium.”
