Chapman’s homer helps Blue Jays snap Yankees’ 11-game winning streak

The Yankees’ 11-game winning streak was ended Wednesday night when Matt Chapman hit a home run and Yusei Kikuchi pitched six scoreless innings for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jordan Romano worked the ninth in the 12th save to save Toronto from losing the final game of their three-game series. The Blue Jays (16-10) have won 10 out of 15 of their last fifteen games.

Joey Gallo hit a solo shot for New York’s lone run. The Yankees suffered their second loss in 15 games.

New York, at 18-7, leads the major leagues. However, their divisional lead against the Blue Jays in second place was trimmed to 2 1/2.

Chapman struck a single shot against Nestor Cortes (1-1), in the second inning, but Gallo responded with a solo homer in the third against Kikuchi (1-1).

Bo Bichette, after reaching on a two out double, restored Toronto’s lead at the bottom of the inning. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. brought him in with an RBI hit.

The Blue Jays loaded all the bases into the frame, but Santiago Espinal was unable to ground and New York was spared further damage.

Kikuchi’s best start of the season saw him allow three hits and a walk, with seven strikeouts.

The Yankees threatened in seventh inning, after Toronto reliever David Phelps gave back-toback one-out walks. Gallo was hit by Tim Mayza on the left-hand side, before Isiah Kner-Falefa was able to score on a groundout.

Yimi Garcia pitched a perfect eighth inning. She also fanned Aaron Judge for the third out. Aaron Boone, Yankees manager, was dismissed before the strikeout was complete. This was apparently due to arguing strikes and balls.

Romano, a Markham, Ont. pitcher, gave up two hits and gave Gallo a two-out walk in order to load the bases. Kiner-Falefa grounded to end the game. Guerrero stretched out and picked Chapman’s throw from third base.

The Yankees contested the call, but the decision was upheld. The game lasted two hours and 42 minutes, with 29,057 people in attendance.
