Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime lands 6th seed at Wimbledon

Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime will be seeded sixth at Wimbledon.

The Montreal native is ranked 9th on the ATP Tour. However, he moved up 3 spots to the third Grand Slam of this season due to the ban on Russian players following the invasion of Ukraine. 1 Daniil Medvedev, and No. 8 Andrey Rublev, while the No. Alexander Zverev is out due to a foot injury.

Auger Aliassime, 21 years old, reached the quarterfinals of last year’s grass-court tournament. Canadian Denis Shapovalov, who lost to Novak Djokovic last year in the semifinals, is currently seeded 13th.

Meanwhile, Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will be on opposite sides of the draw as Nos. 1, and 2.

This was not the case at last month’s French Open, where Nadal defeated Djokovic in quarter-finals to win a men’s-record 22nd Grand Slam championship title.

Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, will be in the women’s draw. However, she will not be seeded.

Canada’s Bianca Andreescu is the 2019 U.S. Open champion. She is also unseeded. Third in the women’s doubles bracket is Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski with her Mexican partner Giuliana Olmos.

The draw takes place Friday and the tournament starts Monday.

Since 2021 the seedings for the singles, men’s and ladies’, have been based on world rankings.

Williams hasn’t played competitively since she retired from her first-round match last year at Wimbledon. Williams has been granted a wild card entry for the singles tournament at The All England Club, which begins next week. She could thus be drawn to play any player in the first round.

The top-ranked player at Wimbledon will be Iga Swiatek from Poland.
