Adebayo, Herro power Heat past shorthanded 76ers in series opener

Tyler Herro scored 25 and Bam Adebayo added 24 and 12 rebounds. The Miami Heat defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, who were shorthanded, 106 to 92 on Monday night. This was the first of their Eastern Conference semifinals series.

Jimmy Butler scored 15 more points for the Heat, who were ranked number one. Gabe Vincent got 10 and P.J. had 10. Tucker.

The 76ers were without Joel Embiid, the MVP finalist who isn’t even in Miami while recovering from an orbital fracture and concussion — injuries suffered in Philadelphia’s first-round-clinching win at Toronto. He is not expected to be in Game 2.

As one would expect, he was not there. Tobias Harris scored 27 for Philadelphia. Tyrese Maxey got 19, James Harden had 16, and James Harden had five assists.

Game 2 will be played in Miami on Wednesday.

Miami was aggressive and put Tucker on Harden. He then guarded Harden the entire 94-foot floor. This is a similar strategy to the Heat used against Trae Young in Atlanta’s first series.

It worked — for a while. Miami led by as high as 12 points in the first quarter. After Herro’s eight points, a 10-2 run gave the Heat a 13 percent advantage at 37-24. This was their biggest half-time lead. After another Herro basket, the margin was still 46 to 36 midway through the second.

The remaining half of the time was Philly.

Over the last 6 minutes of the first half, Miami went 1-9 from the field. Philadelphia made four turnovers and went on to win 15-4. Harden’s 28 second shot in the lane put the 76ers up 51-50. This was their first lead of night and the score they took to the locker room.

The 76ers scored four of the first five points in the second half. They then went up by five. This was it for the 76ers.

Adebayo got a bullet from Tucker and dunk. This was the final lead change for the night. The Heat led 98-77 after the first of a 10-0 run.

Philadelphia was able to fall to 6-9 this season without Embiid
