Pfizer CEO tests positive for COVID-19, has mild symptoms

Pfizer, the world’s largest producer of COVID-19 vaccines has confirmed that its top executive has been infected and is now experiencing mild symptoms.

Albert Bourla, Chairman and CEO said Monday was his first day of Pfizer’s Paxlovid treatment. He is currently on isolating as he recovers.

Bourla received four doses of Comirnaty (the COVID-19 vaccine) from BioNTech and New York Drugmaker. He said In a brief statement, the company stated that he is optimistic about a quick recovery.

Since the vaccine’s introduction more than a decade ago, over 128 million Americans have been fully vaccinated. Nearly 61 million have also received an initial booster shot.

Scientists believe the vaccine offers solid protection against serious illness and hospitalization. But, it has become more difficult for vaccines to stop all forms of illness developing due to the evolving virus.

Moderna and Pfizer have updated their vaccines in order to offer protection against newer viruses for a fall booster program.

Research has also shown that Paxlovid is very effective in preventing serious illnesses if administered soon after symptoms begin.

Comirnaty (and Paxlovid) are the most popular COVID-19 treatment and vaccine on the market. They accounted for nearly $17 billion in Pfizer’s second quarter sales.
