CRTC to get new chair as role of broadcast regulator expands

OTTAWA –
Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission announced that Ian Scott, its chair, and his broadcasting vice-chair will soon be replaced. Canadian Heritage is accepting applications.
Caroline Simard was appointed to five year terms at the broadcast regulator in 2017, and their tenures are expected to end in early September.
As it expands to include online streaming platforms, online news, and tech giants, the CRTC will be under new leadership. There are several bills from the government proposing new powers.
It has been criticised for not having the knowledge to regulate both the digital sphere and traditional broadcasting and telecommunications.
Canadian Heritage is accepting applications for Scott’s position with a salary up to $328,000.
Pablo Rodriguez, Heritage Minister, tweeted his gratitude to Scott for his five years of hard work and service.
