Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, will address employees on Thursday in a rare move that is unusual for the unusual takeover bid of the world’s wealthiest man for Twitter. This even though his offer of US$44 billion has not been finalized.
Parag Agrawal, Twitter CEO, announced that an all-hands meeting would be held for employees on Monday via email. According to The Wall Street Journal they would be able to submit any questions in advance.
The meeting is a “clear first step in the direction towards the possibility of a deal happening” and a smart strategy move as Twitter employees were left in the dark over recent months and have many queries during this volatile period. saidDaniel Ives, analyst at Wedbush
Musk made a deal to buy Twitter in April. However, he has been at odds with the company over the number bots or fake accounts that exist on the social media platform. Musk saidMusk said that he would put the deal on hold until May 13, but it seems unlikely that he will be able to do so on his own. Musk saidHe needed more data from Twitter about these bot accounts, despite the fact that Twitter has reported its bot estimates (and its admission that they may not be accurate) to investors for years.
Other reasons for concern could be given by Twitter employees about Musk’s impending acquisition. The billionaire irascible has hurled a barrage at the company, calling it a threat to free speech, its safety and moderation policies, and its anonymous user accounts. He also wants to abolish its ban on former President Donald Trump, which is something he has promised to reverse.
Harry Kraemer is a former CEO of Baxter International and a professor at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. He said that the deal is not “a guarantee until the transaction is done” and that there are still many steps before the purchase can take place.
Kraemer stated, “It is almost unusual for someone who is not a buyer of a company to speak to employees of the company he’s interested in buying.” said.
If history is any indication Musk might move the company to Texas. He did so with Tesla’s headquarters in Dec 2021. He is a passionate crypto enthusiast and has suggested that premium accounts could accept the cryptocurrency dogecoin. Musk also had Tesla purchase US$1.5 Billion in bitcoin once and allowed buyers to pay their cars with cryptocurrency for a brief time.
He also targets Twitter’s work from home policy. He once called for the company headquarters to be transformed into a “homeless shelter” as he believes that it is too restrictive. saidSo few people actually worked there. This comment was also a thinly disguised jab at San Francisco, which has large homeless population.
It’s unclear if the meeting this week means that the sides are closer in resolving their differences. Despite Wall Street doubts, Twitter shares have been trading below the US$54.20 per-share Musk has agreed to pay.
